Pediatric Cancer Care: Qualitative Review of Caregivers Knowledge, Attitude and Practices at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Lahore.

Objective: Cancer related Knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) are important in determining the success of cancer treatment. Study Designs: There is paucity of data in Pakistan so we designed a qualitative review of caregivers of pediatric oncology patients using a locally developed semi-structured questionnaire. Place and Duration of Study: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore between February to August 2016. Material and Methods: A unique questionnaire was designed in accordance with local culture, religious beliefs and practices. Results: We interviewed 61 patients. Most were parents 69%. Most caregivers 65% considered cancer as dangerous disease. Most caregivers 44% did not know about cancer causes. Most caregivers 93% considered cancer curable. Most caregivers 68.9% used spiritual healing. Conclusion: We identified stressors such as financial issues and language. These finding can be helpful in targeting specific issues in counseling and education of caregivers of pediatric oncology patients.
