Risk Factors in childhood Asthma and their Impact on Asthma Control.

Objective: To explore various risk factors associated with childhood asthma and their impact on asthma control. Study design: Descriptive cross-sectional study Place and Duration of Study: The inpatient and outpatient department of Pediatric Medicine of the Children`s Hospital Lahore from December 2015 to December 2016. Material and Methods: Total 285 diagnosed cases of bronchial asthma were included. Risk factors and asthma control was assessed according to global initiative for asthma (GINA) guidelines. Results: Mean age was 8.0 ? 3.6 years. Regarding the asthma control 116 (40.7%) had well controlled asthma, 65 (22.8%) partially controlled and 104 (36.5%) had uncontrolled asthma. History of eczema was found in 16 (5.6%), allergic rhinitis 37 (13%) while history of maternal and paternal asthma was found in 37 (13%) and 19 (6.7%) respectively. Parental asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema and serious respiratory tract infection in infancy were the significant risk factors that contribute to poor asthma control in children. Conclusion: Family history of asthma in parents has significant association with poor asthma control in children.
