Results of esophageal Carcinoma Management - An Experience of ten years 1988-1998.

This study was carried out over a period of ten years in surgical unit 11 of Sandeman Provincial Hospital, Quetta on 70 patients having carcinoma of oesophagus. Of these 58 were males and 12 were females. The peak incidence was in the sixth decade of life. Dysphagia, vomiting, weightloss, pain and weakness were the major presenting symptoms. Anaemia and generalized wasting were the main signs observed. Specific diagnostic tools were the X-ray barium swallow, oesophagoscopy and histopathological examination. Majority of the patients underwent surgical procedures like transhaital oesophagectomy and Rusch tube prosthesis. Of these 30 patients (42.9%) underwent transhaital oesophagectomy and in 28 patients (40%) Rusch tube intubation performed through upper abdominal incision while 12 patients (17.1 %) were sent for radiotherapy after feeding gastrostomy. The overall mortality was 25.7%.
