Early preoperative preparation of Toxic Goitres.

This was a descriptive type of study conducted to emphasize the effective preparation of patients. for thyroidectomy, with beta-blockers, in a much quicker time. This was carried out on the twenty-five patients with toxic goiter, admitted in the North Surgical Ward, Mayo Hospital Lahore, and were operated on the elective list. Study period was Sep`99 to Jan`2001. The duration of beta-blockers for was 7-10 days prior to surgery. Out of these 25 patients, eighteen had multinodular goitre while five patients had solitary hot nodule and two patients were having diffuse goitre but they chose surgery. Patients were operated after 7-14 days, when their symptoms had been controlled. The mean pulse rate prior to medication was 123/min and after treatment it was 80 beats/min. No patient developed thyroid crisis. Thyrotoxic patients can be easily, safely and quickly prepared for thyroidectomy with beta-blockers.
