Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;9(2):114-7.

The Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is the commonest cause of acute polyneuropathy resulting in progressive muscle weakness leading to hospital admission and at times causing severe disability and death. This study was done to see the response to treatment in patients with axonal variety of GBS with plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulins. Fifteen patients diagnosed as axonal variety of GBS on nerve conduction studies and electromyography were enrolled for the study. This prospective analytical study was conducted at Shaikh Zayed Postgraduate Medical Institute Lahore. These patients were treated with Plasmapheresis or Intravenous Immunoglobulins and response to treatment was assessed at 3 months interval. The result showed that out of 15 patients, only 3 patients showed very mild improvement with the treatment thus suggesting that treatment with plasmapheresis or immunoglobulins was not as beneficial in the treatment of axonal GBS as in other forms of GBS.
