Reliability of Psychiatric Diagnoses in Cross-Cultural Setting.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;9(2):124-6.

This paper describes the inter-rater reliability of Psychiatric Diagnoses made by a British Psychiatrist, who interviewed Pakistani patients in English either independently or with the help of an interpreter and a bilingual Psychiatrist of Pakistani origin who interviewed the same group of patients in their own language. There was a high level of agreement between the diagnoses made by the two psychiatrists. The emphasis on interview skills as part of psychiatric training is the likely explanation for the findings. The reliability of diagnoses in Psychiatric research is an important problem for researchers in the developing countries and these findings are reassuring that psychiatric training and knowledge of local language and culture improves the reliability of the diagnoses made by psychiatrists in developing countries.
