Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;9(2):169-70.

The objective of this study is to find different causes of anemia in patients admitted in a medical ward of a tertiary care hospital. It is a retrospective, non interventional, observational, hospital based study. One hundred patients of anemia admitted in North Medical Ward of Mayo Hospital, Lahore were included in the study. The patients were admitted during April 2002 to June 2003. One hundred patients suffering from anemia were studied. The final diagnosis was as bleeding 40%, chronic renal failure 15%, chronic liver disease 5%, miscellaneous causes 40%. Due to commonly prescribed and easily available different hematinic preparations, deficiency anemias are not common in the hospital setting. In admitted patients presence of low Hb% levels mean a more sinister diagnosis which needs a chain of special investigations for proper diagnosis.
