Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;9(2):171-2.

Perianal pathologies in general and fistula in ano (perianal abcess) in particular have riddled the mankind since the ancient times. Controversies still exist between different schools of thoughts regarding the treatment modalities. This is a prospective study of 37 patients who were treated for low fistula in ano. 20 were treated by fistulotomy (Group A) and 17 by fistulectomy (Group B) between February 2001 and February 2003. Patients were followed up for a period of 12 months. It was concluded that fistulotomy is better treatment option as it results in shorter hospital stay lesser postoperative pain, bleeding, quicker wound healing and almost negligible incidence of incontinence.
