Frequency of leukemia as diagnosed through bone marrow biopsy in Peshawar.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;30(3):79-81.

Objective: To determine the pattern of leukemias as diagnosed through bone marrow biopsy in different age and sex groups in our setup. Material and Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar. It was a four-year study done from July 2014 to July 2018. Patients diagnosed with leukemia on examination of the blood smear and bone marrow aspirate were included in the study. Patients whose aspirate smears were diluted were excluded from the study. Bone marrow aspirates and biopsies was performed in all patients and reported by consultant haematologists. Results: About 145 patients were diagnosed as leukemia during the study period. Of these, 15 cases were excluded due to inadequacy of aspirate samples. Age range of the study sample was 1 to 87 years (mean 38 +- 7.1) years. 52 % cases of leukemia were with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (68/145), 25 % were with acute myeloid leukemia (32/145). Conclusion: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was the commonest leukemia in our setup. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy still remains an important diagnostic tool to diagnose leukemias.
