Pak Paed J Jan ;44(1):43-50.

Objective: To investigate the personal (appraisal, coping, personality) and interpersonal factors (perceived social support and attachment styles) as predictors of post-traumatic stress symptoms severity (PTSS) in flood affected adolescents. Study Design: Correlation study with cross sectional research design. Place and Duration of Study: Study was completed within 6 months in Jhang and Hafizabad District. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 561 flood affected adolescents (M = 14.65, SD = 1.13) from government schools of Jhang (18-Hazari) and Hafizabad (Vanike Tarrhar). Results: Low extraversion with more perceived stress and threat, more anxious and avoidant attachment found to be significantly related with high PTSS severity. However, use of confrontive coping, self-controlling, positive reappraisal coping, secure attachment and support from friends are significantly negatively associated with PTSS. Conclusion: It is concluded that appraisal, coping, secure attachment and support are psychological dimensions which need to be worked on simultaneously for prevention of PTSS.
