Placenta previa: a 2-year analysis.
Pak J Med Res Jan ;42(2):58-60.

Objective:The pregnancies complicated by Placenta Pravevia were reviewed over a two year period (from January 2000 to December 2001) at Holy Family Hospital Unit-I. The objective was to assess whether the antenatal course, in patient care and events leading to delivery are predictive of fetal outcome. Study Design: The case records of women with a pregnancy complicated by placenta praevia were reviewed retrospectively. The study population consisted of 42 women with singleton pregnancy. Patients were classified into two groups on the basis of vaginal bleeding during the antenatal period. Diagnosis of placenta praevia was made on ultrasound examination. The antenatal course of such patients, their mode of delivery and fetal outcome were assessed. Results: There were 6844 total deliveries during the study period. Forty-two women with diagnosis of placenta praevia fulfilled the study criteria. These cases were grouped into APH (35 cases) and non APH groups (7 cases). Type of placenta praevia, mode of delivery and gestational age at diagnosis and delivery were noted in each group. Perinatal outcome in terms of apgar score and birth weight in both groups and in all cases noted. Number of episodes of vaginal bleeding in antenatal period in relation to type of placenta praevia and fetal outcome was studied. Conclusion: It was observed that inspite of improvement in the diagnosis of placenta praevia, there are no clinical features which could predict the clinical outcome of such women. Therefore the traditional in patient care is the best option for the management of cases with placenta praevia.
