J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;7(1):24-6.

Background: A prospective study to assess foreign body inhalation in children. Method: The study was conducted at the Department of Pediatrics, Rawalpindi General Hospital from June 1999 to July 2003. Ninety-one children who presented with sudden onset of breathing difficulty with or without history of choking and having unequal air entry on chest auscultation were referred for rigid bronchoscopy both for therapeutic and diagnostic purpose. Results: Eighty-three children (91.2%) were found to have foreign body on rigid bronchoscopy. Most patients were in the 1-5 year age group (92%). Most common type of foreign bodies were peanuts (39.75%) and beetle nuts (32.53%). Sudden onset of respiratory distress and choking were the most common presenting features. Conclusion: High index of suspicion in patients with sudden onset of respiratory distress is the key to diagnose bronchial foreign bodies in pediatric patients.
