Diagnostic Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) disease spectrum.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;49(2):107-10.

The present study was conducted to validate the diagnostic spectrum of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). ERCP was performed on 240 patients between April 1994 and May 1995, at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. There were 146 (60.83%) male and 94 (39.17%) female subjects. Desired ductal opacification was achieved in 2.12 out of total 240 (88.33%) cases. Malignant biliary obstruction 83/240 (33.58%) was found twice as common as benign obstruction 41/240 (17.08%). Periampullary carcinoma 30/240 112.50%) was more frequent than choledocholithiasis 26/240 (10.83%) as underlying etiology. We, therefore, conclude that ERCP is a safe and effective diagnostic investigation. Periampullary neoplasm is a common cause of obstruction in local population.
