Effect of Walnut Consumption on the Lipid Profile in Cardiac patients.

Walnut is a dense source of proteins, fats vitamins, minerals and polyphenols which makes the fruit indispensable for human nutrition. The walnut help in lowering of cholesterol, low in inflammation and maintain arterial function increasing the concentration o dietary fatty acids which is present in walnut in high amount. Objective: To determine the effect of walnut consumption on the lipid profile in cardiac patients. Methods: A competitive study was conducted at Sheikh Zayad Hospital Lahore and completed within months. Total 75 patients were selected for the study including both male and female. Patient were divided into two groups one was G (control group) and G2 (served with 30g o walnut) one group have 37 patients and other have 38 patients. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 22. Results: 35% Decrease of cholesterol level 35% in LD level25% in triglycerides level and 25% of VLD level was observed in the patients served wit 30gof walnuts during 60 day trial (G2).Increase HDL 15% was also observed in G2 as compare to control group. Conclusions: Consumption of 30g of walnut for 60 days resulted in reduced cholesterol LDL triglycerides, VLDL level whereas increase HDL level. Walnuts in the diet improved blood lipid profile without adversely affecting bod weight or blood pressure. Keywords: Walnut, Cardiovascular disease, heart health diet, lipid profile.
