Clinical Audit of Treatment Outcome (WHO Guidelines)in Severe Acute Malnutrition: Experience at the Children\'s Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Multan.

Objective: To assess treatment outcomes and associated factors of Severe Acute Malnutrition among Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition in the Children`s Hospital and the Institute of Child Health, Multan. Study Design: Retrospective study. Place and Duration of Study: At Nutrition Rehabilitation center of the Children`s Hospital and the Institute of Child Health, Multan from 1stJanuary 2012 to May 2018. Material and Methods: Data was collected by two nutritionists from outcome register of Nutrition Stabilization Center. Questionnaire was designed and patient charts were used as a data source. Patients with SAM age 1-60 months were included and F75 and F 100 were given as therapeutic feed recommended by WHO. Results: Total 1544 patients were admitted at Nutrition Stabilization Center from 1st January 2012 to May 2018 and enrolled. 93% were discharged from hospital after improvement in feeding and training of mothers. 95(6%) cases expired during hospital stay, 19 (1%) cases left against medical advice. 91% cases were diagnosed as having marasmus and 9% as Kwashiorkor. Mean duration of stay at hospital was 10 � 15 day. Conclusion: Management of children with severe acute malnutrition by implementing WHO feeding protocols was effective in reducing mortality rate in these children. The monitoring and evaluation of therapeutic feeding programs (WHO guidelines) must be maintained by hospital to improve outcome of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. There is need to educate and train mothers for optimum infant and young child feeding practices.
