Susceptibility Pattern of Nosocomial Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Isolates to Vancomycin and other Anti-Staphylococcal Antibiotics.
Biomedica Jan ;16:32-5.

This study was undertaken to determine the susceptibility of MRSA to vancomycin in wake of the development of low level resistance to it in Japan, France and USA. For this purpose 48 MRSA strains were tested by the standard Kirby-Bauer method. Susceptibility to vancomycin and other commonly used anti-staphylococcal antibiotics was determined. All MRSA strains studied were sensitive to vancomycin in the present study. To prevent the emergence of vancomycin resistance in MRSA we must strive to have good infection control practices in the hospitals.

The Kirby Bauer method described in this article is not recommended for datection of VISA(vancomycin intermediate Staphylococcus aureus) strains. CDC Atlanta USA describes three criteria for detection of VISA strains, consisting of MIC by Broth microdilution on MH agar of 8-16ug/ml, Growth on BHI agar containing 6ug/ml of vancomycin and Etest MIC of >6 ug/ml. All three criteria must be met before an isolate is labeled VISA.
