A study of anemia in pregnant women of Railway Colony, Multan.

Study type: A prospective and descriptive study, which was conducted at Gynae/Obs OPD of Railway Hospital, Multan, Objectives: To know the prevalence, types and causes of anemia in pregnant women of Railway Colony, Multan. Methodology: Haemoglobin (Hb), blood counts, peripheral blood film, MCV estimation and abdominal ultrasonography were used as aids to clinical approach for evaluation of anemia. Results: Multiparity rate was 86% and 96%; having Hb <11.0 g/dl. Third trimester presentation was most frequent (88%). Fetal loss was seen in 32%. Mean duration of marriage was 8.64 + 6.16 years, while mean income was 3.96 + 2.58 thousand rupees per month. Microcytic hypochromic anemia was observed in 76% women; 64% never used hematinics, while 12% had received blood transfusion during pregnancy or labour. No women had good dietary habits. Conclusions: A comprehensive approach is required regarding health education, and management of anemia in pregnant population.
