Patients cost per hospital bed in a tertiary health care facility.

This study was undertaken to point out the deficiencies in hospital budget allocation and to draw attention to the burden on the patients admitted in a tertiary health care facility and a major teaching hospital at Peshawar. The main objective of this study was to calculate average cost of an admitted (indoor) patient and the cost shared between the hospital and patient`s own resources. Another aim of this study was to know the number of annual admission of Afghan Refugees and the cost borne by the hospital on their treatment from its annual allocated budget. According to the data collected, of total annual hospital`s budget 77% were non-developmental expenditure, of which 42% was paid as salaries of the staff and 35% payments of utility bills/admin cost. Only a small portion 23% of the total budget was utilized on medicines, investigations and consumables used for patients. The average budgetary cost of hospital on a patient/bed was Rs.3739.05, out of which only Rs 853.51 were the expenditures of medicines, investigations and disposable items and rest of Rs.2885.54 was the non-developmental expenditure of the Hospital.
