J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;12(4):21-3.

Background: Urinary tract infection is one of the common infections in the indoor as well as outdoor patients. Identification of the causative organism and susceptibility to antimicrobials is highly important, so that proper drug is chosen to treat the patient in early stages. Methods: In this study 400 ,cases of UTI were studied. Identification of the causative organism and the sensitivity pattern to common antimicrobials were noted. The antimicrobials include: Ampicillin, Cotrimoxazole, Minocycline, Pipemidic Acid (Urixin), Nalidixic Acid, Norfloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamicin and Ceftriaxon (Rocephin). Results: Out of total 400 cases, 85.5% (342) were gram-negative bacilli and 14.5% (58) were gram-positive cocci. Out of total 342 isolates of gram-negative bacilli, 76.6% (262) were E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae 14.3% (49), Proteus species 5.2% (18) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3.8% (13). The gram-negative bacilli showing sensitivity against ampicillin were 37.9%, cotrimoxazole 34.9%, minocycline 43.5%, nalidixic acid 56.1%, norfloxacin 69.2% Pipemidic acid 64.3%, ciprofloxacin 72.8%, gentamicin 56.1%, ceftriaxon (Rocephin) 75.4%.
