Helicobacter Pylori and Gastroduodenal Disease: Evaluation of three Diagnostic Tests.
J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;12(4):26-8.

Background: Helicobacter Pylori is now one of the established causes of gastroduodenal disease. Since it can be treated and eradicated, the present study aims to determine a suitable method for its detection. Methods: Antral biopsies were obtained in triplicate from 100 patients suffering from gastroduodenal disease. Three tests were compared: a. Histopathology b. Direct Urease Test c. Culture. Results: Histopathology was found to be the most sensitive method (66%) followed by the Direct Urease Test (60%); the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.10). H. Pylori was detected in only 45% cases by culture. Conclusions: Although histopathology is the most sensitive test for the detection of H.Pylori, it is expensive and time consuming. Culture is less sensitive, expensive and time consuming. Direct urease test is a sensitive, rapid and cost-effective method.
