Pak J Pathol Jan ;12(4):18-24.

To study the clinicopathological and immunophenotypical features of primary gastric lymphoma in Northern Pakistan. This is a retrospective study in which all lymphoma cases reported at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Rawalpindi from 1992-1997 were reviewed. Cases of primary gastric lymphoma fulfilling, selection criterion were retrieved and studied. During the study period 1296 cases of malignant lymphoma were reported out of which 110 (56.9%) were primary gastrointestinal lymphomas. Twenty seven cases of gastric lymphoma fulfilled the selection criterion. Fourteen cases were of low grade MALT and 13 of high grade MALT type according to Isaacson`s classification. Gastric antrum was the commonest site. High grade MALT lymphomas showed larger size lesions with deeper invasion. Helicobacter pylori were identified in 10 cases each of High and Low grade MALT lymphoma. All cases were of B cell type on immuhistochemistry. Primary gastric lymphoma is a common extranodal lymphoma in our population. The whole spectrum of the disease is seen and there is a frequent occurrence of Helicobacter pylori which may have an etiological role. All our cases represent primary B cell lymphoma.
