Association of serum gamma glutamyl transferase as biomarker of oxidative stress in type II diabetics with and without diabetic retinopathy.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;32(4):166-70.

Objectives: To find the association of serum gamma glutamyl transferase with diabetic retinopathy and to determine the correlation of serum gamma glutamyl transferase with glycated haemoglobin. Material and Methods: This Observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Heavy Industries Taxila Education City Institute of Medical Sciences, Taxila from February 2019 to January 2020. Three hundred subjects participated in the study; these were divided into groups. Retina were examined for lesions of diabetic retinopathy and blood HbA1c was measured for glycemic control. Serum gamma glutamyl transferase was estimated by levels of enzymatic colorimetric method on Cobas c501. ANOVA was used to find any significant difference in serum gamma glutamyl transferase between groups and Chi square test was used to find association between serum gamma glutamyl transferase and diabetic retinopathy. Pearson correlation test was used to find correlation between serum gamma glutamyl transferase and glycated hemoglobin. Results: Out of three hundred, 149 (49.7%) were males and 151 (50.3%) were females. The average age of non-diabetic group was 55 +- 13years, diabetic group without diabetic retinopathy was 52 +- 16 years and diabetic group with diabetic retinopathy was 53 +- 13years. Gamma glutamyl transferase concentration was significantly high in patients of type-II diabetics as compared to non-diabetics it was higher in diabetics with diabetic retinopathy when compared with those without diabetic retinopathy (p<0.05). p=0.000 indicating a strong association of elevated serum Gamma Glutamyl Transferase levels and oxidative stress in type II diabetics Conclusion: Gamma glutamyl transferase has strong association with oxidative stress leading to diabetic retinopathy. A significant positive correlation was observed between serum gamma glutamyl transferase and glycemic levels i.e. glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Key Words: Diabetic retinopathy, Gamma glutamyl transferase, Oxidative stress.
