Pak J Pathol Jan ;12(2):11-4.

This study was carried out to find out the histological changes in the hysterectomy specimens of 260 cases diagnosed during 18 months. The hysterectomy specimens were received at the Department of Histopathology, Combined Military Hospital, Peshawar (Pakistan). All the specimens were dealt with according to the standard procedures for paraffin embedding. The slides were examined and diagnoses were made. Clinically, menorrhagia was the predominant symptom (46%) requiring this operative procedure. The average age at the time of operation was 44.77 years and majority of the patients being in the range of 40-60 years. The average size of the uterus was 10x7.1 x5.2 cm, cervix was thick lipped in 92(35%) cases and maximum size of ovarian cyst (out of 62 cases of ovarian cysts) was 16cm. The commonest lesions in the corpus uteri were leiomyomata (35.7%), adenomyosis (30%) and endometritis (8.46%). Chronic cervicitis was mostly found on histology of cervix (41.53%) and dysfunctional cysts in the ovary (66.12%). Few cases of malignant tumours of cervix, endometrium and ovary were also found. In conclusion, hysterectomy is the commonly employed operative procedure, leiomyomata, adenomyosis and chronic cervicitis being the predominant lesions in the uteri and dysfunctional cysts in the ovaries.
