A study of seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C in mothers and children in Lahore.

Dried blood spots from 417 mothers and 538 children were screened for markers of Hepatitis B & C and HIV These samples were taken from the pediatric department of Mayo Hospital. Lahore and the obstetric department of Lady Aitchison Hospital, Lahore. The results showed that 10 (2.3%) mothers and 18 (3.35%) children were positive for HbsAg. Out of these 3 (10.71%) samples (one from mothers and 2 from children) had HBeAg and another 3 (10.71%) samples (one from mothers and 2 from children) were positive for anti-HBc Twenty two (2.3%) samples (11 from mothers and 11 from children) were positive for anti-HBs. Anti-HCV antibodies were detected in 61 (6.38%) samples out of which 39 (9.35%) were from mothers and 22 (4.09%) were from children No sample was positive for antibodies against HIV. It is recommended that a large-scale study should be carried out in children and mothers to determine frequency and risk factors for transmission of hepatitis B and C.
