Prevalence of Periventricular / Intraventricular Hemorrhage in premature and low birth weight infants.
Pak Paed J Jan ;22(4):145-7.

The prevalence of periventricular haemorrhage (PHV) and intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) among the premature and low birth weight infants in our population is not well documented. In this prospective study, a total number of 120 live born premature infants of gestational age less than 34 weeks and birth weight of 1000-2000 gms were studied over a period from July 1996 to August 1997 at Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Every premature infant had at least three cranial ultrasound examinations on first, third and 5th day of admission. The over all prevalence of PHV-IVH was 75% for premature infants weighing less than 2 kg and gestational age less than 34 weeks. The prevalence and severity of PHV-IVH increased with both decreasing birth weight and gestational age. The prevalence of PVHIVH in our study is higher than reported in literature.
