Estrogen Receptor as Tumour Marker in Malignant Breast Disease: A Retrospective Study Of 100 Cases.
Biomedica Jan ;17:1-5.

Estrogen receptor determination in human breast cancer has become an accepted tool both as a prognostic factor and for the prediction of response to therapy. Receptor status was evaluated in 100 patients. ER status was positive in 37%, weakly positive in 17% and negative in 46% of cases. The overall response to hormonal therapy was 38.5%. Response was obtained in 48% of the patients with ER+ve tumours and 28.5% in ER-ve tumours. Survival after five years was 61% in ER+ve and only 39% in ER-ve, whereas death rate was 34% in ER+ve and 66% in ER-ve tumours. Thus, despite a controversy, adjuvant treatment by hormones has been widely used in management of breast cancer as an accepted means of improving disease free survival and reducing mortality.
