Experience of Renal Biopsy in children.
Pak Paed J Jan ;24(2):51-5.

In this study records of patients who had undergone renal biopsy between March 1995 and March 1999 were analyzed. Biopsy was taken using a Tru-cut Biopsy needle after locating the kidney by ultrasounography. In each case we assessed the indication for taking the biopsy, the complications resulting from the procedure and histological findings. There were a total of 43 patients (23 boys and 20 girls) ranging from 7 months to 18 years at the time of biopsy. Nineteen (44.18%) patients were steroid dependent nephrotics while eighteen (41.86%) were steroid resistant. Three (6.97%) children were biopsied because of atypical presentation of nephritic syndrome. Two (4.65%) children had presented with primary acute nephritis with a rapidly progressive course. One child (2.32%) suffered from chronic renal failure of unknown cause. Complications observed included transient microscopic hematuria in 40 (93.02%) cases. Mild lumbar pain was seen in 35 (81.39%) gross haematuria in one (2.2%), severe lumbar pain in 2 (4.64%) and renal hematoma was seen in one (2.2%) patient. Histological examination of biopsy revealed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in 12 (27.9%), minimal change disease in 9 (20.93X) membranoproliferative / mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis in 7 (16.27%), mesangial proliferation in 4 (9.30%), membranous nephropathy in 2 (4.65%) while amyloidosis, chronic pyelonephritis and chronic glomerulonephritis was seen in one (2.32%) case each. Insufficient biopsy tissue was obtained in 3 cases (6.97%). One case (2.32%) was lost to follow up.
