Acute Renal Failure in Neonates: clinical presentation, causes and outcome.

A prospective study on Acute renal failure (ARF) in neonates was done in neonates unit of Children Hospital. Chandka Medical College (CMC), Larkana. 31 cases were studied during a period of one scar from 1-1-1999 to 31-12-1999. Major objectives of the study were to find out the causes and outcome of ARF in neonates besides looking at the presentation of ARF Confirmed 31 cases of ARF (20 male and 11 female) were included in the study and majority 25/31 (79%) of them presented in first two weeks of life. Main clinical features on presentation were oligu-anuria in 31 (100%), refusal to food in 21/31 (80%), lethargy in 18/21 (58%) followed by respiratory distress in 11/31 (15%) and bleeding in 10/31 (31%). The most common disorders leading to ARF were Birth Asphyxia in 19/31 (61%), septicemia in 1/31 (12.5%) and hypovolemic shock in 1/31 (12.5%). Highest mortality was seen in cases of birth asphyxia 6/19 (31%) and septicemia 1/4 (25%).
