Pak Paed J Jan ;25(2):35-8.

A prospective study was conducted in neonatal unit of Department of Pediatncs, Mayo Hospital Lahore from 1st June 2000 to 30th September 2000. The major problems with which babies were admitted in the neonatal unit, in order of frequency were, birth asphyxia, sepsis, prematurity and neonatal jaundice. Most of the babies (212 - 70%) presented in first 48 hours of life while 88 babies (29.4%) presented later. Among the admitted patients 83 babies (27.6%) expired. Out of these 61 (73.4% of the total expires) deaths occurred m the first 48 hours of admission. This reflects the severity of the underlying conditions with which they were admitted. Despite all efforts we were not able to reduce the mortality of the admitted newborns. The major contributors to the neonatal mortality were birth asphyxia, sepsis and prematurity. One hundred and thirty five (45%) were delivered at home by untrained dais. It is concluded that it is of utmost importance to concentrate for maternal health and antenatal care.
