Severe bacterial infections in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

In this study 49 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were studied. There were 56 episodes of severe infections which were documented during remission induction, consolidation and intensification phases of chemotherapy. Boys outnumbered girls by 1.58:1 and the mean age was 5 years 5 months. 58.93% were proven to be because of bacterial aetiology. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common isolate. Lower respiratory tract, urinary tract and skin and soft tissue were common sites of infections. No site of infection could be detected in 16 eases. Bacterial infections tended to occur more commonly during remission induction and intensification phases of treatment.
