Pak J Pathol Jan ;12(1):9-11.

A total of 2006 children from different schools of Lahore, representing population belonging to different socioeconomic groups were assessed for the presence of bronchial hyper-reactivty a fall mark of asthma. A 15% decrease in the peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) after exercise was considered as an indicator of bronchial hyper-reactivity. In the study population there were 1 106 (55%) boys and 900 (45%) girls, The mean age of the children was 9.4 years (range 8-12 years) Ninety one (4.5%) children had 15% reduction in PEFR after exercise indicating bronchial hyperreactivity. They included 52 (57%) males and 39 (43%) females. Only 12%, percent of these children were aware of the diagnosis of asthma and were already on anti-asthma medication, while 14% were being treated symptomatically for cough. Proper guidance and education of such children regarding the disease and its prevention can help in preventing development of severe asthma.
