Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura: experience at Department of Pediatrics Mayo Hospital, Lahore; 1998-2001.

Case records of children suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) were analyzed The study period was from 1st January 1998 to 28th March 2001 During this period a total of 48 children suffering from ITP were admitted. Thirty-three children had acute ITP whereas 10 had chronic ITP and 5 cases who were admitted during the last 6 months were not classified. Most of these cases reported from March to August Peak age of admission for acute ITP was 9 years and for chronic ITP was 6 years Male to female ratio was 1:1,2 for acute ITP and 1 2.3 for chronic ITP. Most of the children having acute ITP had a history of one week at the time of presentation whereas most of the children suffering from chronic ITP had symptoms lasting from the month to one year, Hundred percent children suffering from chronic ITP had bruises at initial presentation as compared to 84.8% having acute ITP. Mucosal bleed was present in 60.6% of children having acute ITP and 80% of children with chronic ITP. Organomegaly and lymph node enlargement was seen in 20% children with chronic ITP. There was no significant difference in platelet count, hemoglobin estimation, total and differential counts in children suffering form acute and chronic ITP. Female sex, insidious onset of the disease and preceding history of viral infection were features related with increased chance of development of chronic ITP
