Study of sigmoidoscopic polypectomy in children with colorectal polyps.

This is an outpatient based retrospective study. Patients presenting with recurrent bleeding per rectum of more than 15 days duration were screened for the study. Often stool D/R and C/S were also done to verify suspicion and treatment was given empirically. Patients found to have dysentery (amebic or bacterial) were excluded. Those cases in which sigmoidoscopy was done and polyp was viscualized were included in the study. Fiberoptic sigmoidoscope or halogen bright rigid sigmoidoscope was used for the procedure. Snare loop was used for polypectomy. All samples were sent for histopathology. Results: 94 children were required to undergo the procedure. There were 65 (69.14%) males and 29 (30.85%) females. Majority of the polyps were single 68 (72.34%). 22 cases had two polyps (23.4%) and only 4 (4.26%) had >2 in number.
