A prospective study on birth asphyxia was done in neonatal unit of Children Hospital CMC Larkana. 150 cases were studied during a period of one year from 1-1-1994 to 31-12-1994. Major objective of this study was to find out the causes of high incidence of birth asphyxia & its outcome besides looking at the presentation of birth asphyxia, Confirmed cases of birth asphyxia constituted 25% of admissions in this neonatal unit, 70% were male & majority of babies (55%) were brought into hospital after 24 hours of delivery, Laic cry after birth & cyanosis were the presenting complaints in majority of babies. Again cyanosis & absence of primitive reflexes were the important findings on examination. Deliveries conducted by doctors in hospital did not make any significant difference as compared to deliveries conducted by Dais at home, Mortality rate was 24%.
