Pak J Pathol Jan ;10(3):81-6.

The pattern of utilization of the pediatric emergency room (PER) was assessed for the first five years of operation (1994-1998) in Sheikh Zayed Hospital, a busy tertian care centre. The PER functions on a round-theclock basis throughout the year, is adequately staffed and equipped There were an average of 7,441 patient visits per year (about 20/day), the commonest age being upto 5 years (80%) with a male preponderance (60%). The commonest reason (35.2%) for visiting the PER was acute respirator infection (ARI) followed by diarrheal disorders (25.19%), common childhood infectious diseases (5.15%) and diseases pertaining to the central nervous system (4.9%). Trauma accounted for 3.53% visits and poisoning for 0.66% The results are at variance from experiences of PER from developed countries where trauma is the main reason for visit to the PER followed by disorders of the CNS (17%) and metabolic/toxicologic emergencies (10%).
