Children affected with Diphtheria.

The present study was carried out to consider the age and sex distribution of disease, vaccination status, clinical features, complications and treatment of children suffering front diphtheria. During one year 18 children having diphtheria were admitted in the Department of ENT, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Maximum number of patients (50%) were in the >3-6 years age group. Most of affected children were males (66.66%). Fifteen patients 3.33%) were unvaccinated and 3 patients (16.66%) were vaccinated. Most of the patients (94.44%) were found to have clinical features and complications related to respiratory system. The clinical features and complications related to cardiovascular and neurological systems were recorded. Diphtheria antitoxin and benzyl penicillin were found effective in the treatment of diphtheria.
