Neural tube defects: our experience with 50 patients.

This is a preliminary report of a prospective study of 50 patients conducted at the Department of Pediatric Surgerv & Neurosurgery, Quaid-I-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur, starting from May 1, 1998 to December 31, 1999. Male to female ratio in this series was 1.94:1. Majority (78%) of the patients presented in the neonatal age group. Hydrocephalus was the most common associated anomaly. A large number of patients (60%) were paralyzed at the time of presentation. Myelomeningocele was the commonest lesion in this series. Hydrocephalus developed after repair of the back lesion and responded very well to acetazolamide treatment. Management of these patients is discussed along with review of literature.
