Appendiceal endometriosis, a rare cause of abdominal pain - a case report.
Pak J Surg Jan ;37(4):315-7.

The presence of functional endometrial tissue at a site outside of the uterus is called endometriosis. Endometriosis most commonly involved the pelvic cavity`s organs, in which the ovary is the most common site. Endometriosis is rare in extrapelvic organs; the gastrointestinal tract is the most common site for extrapelvic endometriosis. The appendix is a rare site for endometriosis. In most cases, it is an incidental finding. Pre-operative diagnosis is not possible, and histopathological examination is mandatory for establishing a definite diagnosis. Recently, we received a laparoscopic appendectomy specimen of an 18-year-old female with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Microscopy revealed acute appendicitis with endometriosis. This case is a rare incidental finding. This condition should not cause pathologists to over-diagnose such occurrences as malignancies; neither should they be neglected because they have potential complications.
