Factors associated with anemia in pregnant women attending first antenatal clinic.

Objective: The objective of the study is to determine the factors associated with anemia in pregnant women attending first antenatal clinic. Place of study: Hamdard University Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1st January 2021 to 30th June 2021. Pregnant women attending antenatal clinic for the first time were included in the study. Hemoglobin, Socio-economic status, previous miscarriages, iron and folic acid supplementation and dietary history were recorded. Data was analyzed on SPSS version 20. Results: Out of 158 pregnant women 90 (56.9%) were anemic. The age range of patient were 19-40 years with mean age 28.2+-5.4 years. 33(20.88%) in first trimester, 42 (26.58%)in second trimester and 15(9.49%) pregnant women were anemic in third trimester.16(10.12%), 31 (19.62%), 43 (27.21%) were anemic with good, enough and poor socioeconomic status. 19 (12.02%) and 71 (44.93%) were anemic in primigravida and multigravida. 19(12.02%) were anemic with history of miscarriages. 56 (35.44%) were anemic who took no iron or folic acid supplementation. 64 (40.50%) were anemic with poor dietary history. Conclusion: Anemia is a major health problem in pregnant women. Adequate measures are required to educate pregnant women on anemia and importance of antenatal visits.
