J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;7(2):73-6.

Background: To describe fetal outcome in patients presenting with polyhydramnios both in antenatal period and during labour. Methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from January 2002 to December 2002. A total of 84 patients were included in the study. Fetal outcome was detected by apgar score at birth, presence of any congenital abnormality, admission in nursery and complications in early neonatal period. Results: 84 cases were complicated by polyhydramnios giving an incidence of 2.4% Chronic polyhydramnios occurred in 82 (97.61%) patients with singleton pregnancies, whereas acute symptomatic polyhydramnios occurred in 2(2.38%) cases of twin pregnancy. Total babies born were 86 including two cases of twins, 64 (74.4%) were born alive and 22(25.5%) were still born. Congenital malformations occurred in 27(31.3%) babies. Total perinatal deaths were 29(33.5%). Conclusion: Every patient in whom polyhydramnios is diagnosed should have a complete investigation including expert ultrasonography, amniocentesis for chromosomal analysis and glucose tolerance testing since congenital malformations and diabetes mellitus are associated complications in pregnancies with polyhydramnios.
