Incisional Hernia: Aetiological Factors and Management.
Pak J Surg Jan ;16(3):5-12.

True incidence of incisional hernia is difficult to assess, however, it appears to occur after 3.5% of all abdominal operations [1j. A study was carried out on 30 patients, using prolene onlay mesh for repair of incisional hernia, between January 1997 & December 1998, to evaluate the efficacy of the procedure and note the etiological factors for incisional hernia. Male to female ratio was 1:4 , with a mean age of 42 years and a mean weight of 78.5 kg. 18 patients had initial operations for Gynae / Obstetrics reasons. 11 had laparotomies for peritonitis (5 for bullet injuries, 4 for typhoid perforations and 2 for perforated appendix) and one had cholecystectomy. 25 patients had initial surgical procedure in emergency while 5 patient were operated on elective lists. Absorbable sutures were used in 21 cases and non-absorbable in 9 cases. 26 patients were operated by trainees while 4 were operated by consultants. All 30 incisional hernias were repaired with an onlay prolene mesh, secured with 2/0 prolene suture. Post-operative complications occurred in 7 patients ( 4 patients had minor wound infection, 2 had chest infection and one had abdominal distention). All 30 patients recovered well. With a follow up of 2 to 3 years, no recurrence has been reported so far.
