Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis - an analysis of 2211 cases at PMRC TB research centre, Lahore.

Extra pulmonary Tuberculosis continues to be a major health problem in many countries. In this study 2211 extra pulmonary specimens received at the PMRC TB Research Centre, K.E.M.C., Lahore from the year 1996-1999 were reviewed. Prevalence rate among pulmonary and extra pulmonary cases were 70% and 30%. Overall culture positivity yield is 21% Tuberculous lymphadenitis has the maximum frequency i.e. 31 with 59% culture positivity. Frequency of Genito Urinary was 28.8% with positivity of 13.6%, Pleural fluid showed frequency of 22.8% with positivity of 11.7% C.S.F. and Bone were 2% and 1.8% positive on culture respectively. Frequency and culture positivity of Miscellaneous specimens were 13.4% and 11.7%. It is concluded that tuberculous lymphadenitis is the commonest form of extra pulmonary tuberculosis and remains an important component of disease.
