Health related quality of life assessment among the employees in police and Services hospital Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

BACKGROUND: Health related quality of life (HRQoL) have been considered as an important factor in overall efficiency of healthcare workers and its evaluation is a crucial measure for improving the healthcare interventions of hospital employees. Health related quality of life is significantly affected by various factors including level of education, marital status, age, physiological well-being, social support and psychological factors. OBJECTIVE: To assess the health related quality of life among the employees in police and services hospital Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional analytical approach was applied among employees. Using census method a population size of N=165 including 76% male and 23% female participants were enrolled in the study. Data was collected using the self-administered WHO quality of life survey questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). SPSS version 26.00 was used for analysis. T-test was applied to determine association between HRQOL and independent variables. One way ANOVA was used between dependent variable and selected demographics and P-value of < 0.05 was considered as significant. RESULTS: The study findings revealed that 74% of employees have scored high and their health related quality of life was good while 26% employees were found with poor HRQOL. The overall health related quality of life of employees was good (74%) with the exception of psychological domain where it was relatively poor. Moreover, a statistically significant (p-value < 0.003) association was found between HRQoL subscale of psychological domain and marital status. The HRQOL subscale of psychological domain was statistically significant (p-value < 0.004) with respect to educational status. CONCLUSION: Majority of the employees (74.83%) had good HRQoL in the selected hospital. However, health related quality of life of employees in the psychological domain was poor and significantly affected by marital status and educational status. The study strongly recommended to initiate considerable efforts to ameliorate the psychological status of hospital employees and improvement in the HRQOL of unmarried healthcare professionals was also demanding.
