Effect of Montelukast on patients with mild persistant asthma.

A prospective study conducted over 6 months period between Jan 2001 to June 2001 in the mild persistent asthma in private patients of the investigator & outpatients of department of thoracic medicine JPMC Karachi. There were 50 cases in the study all were non smoker. The patients with mild asthma were included in the study. The patients were excluded from the study if there were hospitalization for the asthma with in 3 months, emergency department treatment for asthma with in 1 month and respiratory tract infection with in 3 weeks. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of montelukast on patients with mild persistent asthma the montelukast produced improvement in clinical benefits by improving FEV1 6.5% over the base line. Similarly day time symptoms reduced 0-3 times per weeks in 40 patients. The nocturnal awakening and 92 agonist actuation used per day were also reduced, 0-6 time per month in 44 patients, 1-4 time per day in 39 patients with montelukast respectively Conclusion:- montelukast produced significant improvement in asthma symptoms in pulmonary function.
