J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;13(2):691-3.

This study was undertaken to find out the frequency and different reasons of non-compliance to treatment in schizophrenic patients. The study was conducted at the out door services of psychiatry department, PIMS, Islamabad. A non-probability sample of 200 follow up patients with various psychiatric illnesses was collected. To know the frequency and different reasons of non-compliance, a questionnaire designed for this purpose was administered to the patients. Out of 200 patients, 39 (19.5%) were diagnosed to be suffering from schizophrenia. The commonest reasons of non-compliance were no realization of advantages/disadvantages of treatment and side effects of medications. It was concluded that non-compliance is common in patients with schizophrenia like any other illness, and it should be addressed duly because compliance is directly related to the prognosis of the illness. All kind of efforts should be exerted to improve the compliance of psychiatric patients by eliminating the factors leading to non-compliance.
