Postsplenectomy Septicemia.
J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;13(2):713-7.

Reports of fatal septicemia began emerging over several decades in splenectomized persons. The risk was initially recognized in children and those with associated hematological and/or malignant disorders. In 1952 Singer presented concrete evidence of increased risk in various disease categories as well as in otherwise healthy persons. With passage of time it became evident that the risk persisted for life and that it was not necessary to have an associated disease. The overwhelming septicemia had been reported as far as 31 years after the splenectomy for simple trauma. This is a review article.
