Pak Paed J Jan ;46(3):250-5.

Objective: This study aimed to determine prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonates presenting with perinatal asphyxia. Study Design: Descriptive cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The research study was conducted for six months from January 2020 to June 2020 with 335 birth asphyxia neonates, born at Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi. Material and Methods: Sample was collected by utilizing non-probability, consecutive sampling technique. Serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and serum electrolytes were evaluated by obtaining a 3 ml blood sample under aseptic measures, after 72 hours and before 96 hours of birth. Neonates with level of serum creatinine more than 2 standard deviation (SD) of the mean value for gestational age i.e. 1.19 were diagnosed as AKI. Results: The mean age of the patients was 3.47 +- 0.50 days and gender distribution showed 219 (65.4%) males and 116 (34.6%) females. The frequency of acute kidney injury was found to be 176 (52.5%). A significant association of acute kidney injury was observed with gender (p-value 0.021) while correlation with age (p-value 0.512), gestational age (p-value 0.333), weight (p-value 0.510), and Apgar score (p-value 0.168) was found to be insignificant. Conclusion: The prevalence of AKI in neonates presenting with perinatal asphyxia was found to be considerably higher.
