Northwest J Med Sci Jan ;2(3):2-6.

BACKGROUND: To assess the prevalence of visual impairment in people aged 60 and above residing in university campus Peshawar. METHODOLOGY: This community centered descriptive cross-sectional study included a total of 103 elderly population aged 60 and above, selected from university campus Peshawar by simple random sampling from January to April 2022.  The elderly population aged 60 and above were included in the study. Severely ill, bedridden and unwilling to participate were excluded from this study. The assessment for visual acuity was done by using standardized Snellen’s chart and Jaeger’s chart. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. RESULTS: The total prevalence rate of visual impairment was 71.8% which include 73.8% (76/103) prevalence of near visual impairment and 70.0% (72/103) of distant visual impairment. Visual impairment was more common in males than in females. 60.2% (62/103) of total elderly were using optical aids. Females were using optical aids more than males. CONCLUSION: Visual Impairment is quite prevalent in the geriatric population. As age increases, vision progressively decreases. So, with increase age, visual acuity should be regularly checked, in order to prevent its progression and improve vision by using visual aids or surgical procedures KEYWORDS: Elderly, Distant Visual Impairment, Near Visual Impairment, Optical aid
