Twin Gestation - Antenatal Complications and Fetal Outcome.

Objective: To determine the incidence of twin pregnancy in Pakistani women. To evaluate the prevalence of pregnancy complications in twin gestation and their effect on fetal outcome. Design: A prospective study. Setting: Women admitted in Labour Room-11 during a period of 12 month at SGRH Lahore. Subjects and Methods: All those women who were admitted and delivered twins were included in the study. On admission, patients were grouped according to the number of pregnancy complications. Results: Out of 2816 deliveries, 41 pairs of twins were delivered during 12 months period. The incidence of twinning was 1.45% or 1 in 69. Eleven patients were booked and 30 were emergency admissions. 19, 14 & 8 patients were placed in Group I, II & III respectively. 34 (78%) patients achieved normal vaginal delivery and Cesarean section was carried out in 9 (21.8%) patients. Four still births and 4 neonatal deaths were recorded in Group-I and Group 11 patients. Perinatal mortality rate was 19.5%. Anaemia, PIH and preterm labor were most common antenatal complications.
