Pak J Obstet Gynaecol Jan ;10(3):27-30.

Perinatal mortality rate (PNMR) not only serves as a quantitative measure of maternity care but it also reflects the economic, social and educational standards of the community. The clinical audit of 146 perinatal deaths at Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi, revealed PNMR of 58.4/1000 total births, 122 perinatal deaths occurred in non-booked cases giving a PNMR of 111.0/1000 total births while in booked cases PNMR was just 17.1/1000 total births. Out of 88 stillbirths 66% of the babies died during pregnancy and remaining 34% in labor. More than 60% of stillbirths weighed more than 2.5 kg. Of the 58 early neonatal deaths commonest causes were low birth weight and birth asphyxia. Neonatal sepsis was found in 34.4% cases. A large percentage of these deaths are preventable, therefore, improving the educational, Socio cultural and economic status of mothers. Planning of maternity services and maintenance of perinatal statistics and clinical audit at all levels is mandatory to improve the results.
